Enterprise Car Club boasts the widest, and most diverse, range of vehicles than any other car club. With over 1,500 vehicles across the UK, we are proud to offer everything from full Electric Vehicles (EVs) to hybrids, low-emission petrol cars of all shapes and sizes, vans, 7-seaters, and SUVs. Running a range of vehicles up and down the country must be no mean feat - so we decided to check in with Chris Raby, our Head of Operations, to find out what goes on behind the scenes.
Hey Chris, can you tell us more about the vehicles our members have available to them?
We have over 1550 vehicles across the UK. These range from small city cars like the Toyota Aygo to large vans like the Ford Transit Custom. In total, we have 20 different makes and models of vehicles. (You can view some of them by clicking here.)
How does Enterprise Car Club decide which cars and vans to offer?
We look at the requirements and usage of our members on a national and local level whilst also seeking feedback directly from them on their preferences. A key part of this mix is to ensure our vehicles meet the environmental standards of the local authority, but that we also respond to the preferences of our members. Being able to offer such a wide range of vehicles means that our members have more choice and can upsize or downsize the type of vehicle they need at a moment's notice.
What vehicles are most popular right now?
The new Kia Niro, a larger hybrid vehicle, has proved very popular since its introduction last year to Enterprise Car Club. We believe this is due to the overall quality of the vehicle; generous equipment and technology as standard, coupled with carefully selected locations means that they generate a lot of interest. That said, we recognise that people need different types of vehicles for different scenarios, and that is one of the many benefits of a Car Club - you can upsize and downsize according to your needs. Smaller vehicles are very popular for shorter trips and many people like the opportunity to try out Plug-In vehicles, whether they are pure Electric or Hybrid.
Should people be nervous about using Plug-In hybrid or Electric Vehicles?
Absolutely not. EVs are perfect for short distance journeys but less popular for longer distances due to the fear they will get stranded if the battery runs flat. In reality though, you shouldn't panic; it's all about the planning of your trip. If you are not quite ready to take the plunge with a full, pure EV, we have recently introduced the brand new Ultra Low Emission Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, which has the inner city benefits of an Electric Vehicle and helps with getting used to the idea of 'plugging in', without the battery range anxiety kicking in. This offers a flexible and attractive introduction to charging vehicles for our members. That said, the response we get from members trying out the Nissan Leaf, a pure EV, is often very positive with most describing the experience as fun and 'surprisingly straightforward'.
You mentioned how you need to plan for your EV trip. Can you give us some tips?
If using a pure EV you have to be conscious of the mileage limitations, and your driving style will most likely have to adapt slightly to get the most efficient experience. Either use them for short trips or plan stop-off points with charging functionality for longer trips. Access to these details is provided to members on booking via an app called Zap-Map. We have seen a reduction in issues whereby members have run out of charge as they become increasingly familiar with the challenges associated with this vehicle type and how to overcome them. We recommend viewing our electric vehicle guide to familiarize yourself with the controls and characteristics of the car before your journey. You can find out more top tips for using an EV from our recent blog post where we caught up with Paul, one of our London members, about his first ever trip using an electric vehicle.
How does Enterprise Car Club decide on where to put its vehicles?
Working in partnership with local authorities, Enterprise Car Club seeks to add vehicles to areas that are near public transport links, such as our current relationship with Virgin East Coast. Ideally we want to offer the service to business and consumer members so city center locations are key. The accessibility of this is further increased by taking into consideration our on-street bays, arranged in partnership with the local authority. As our vehicles are primarily on the streets, we will always assess how convenient and secure each parking bay is before placing a vehicle there. We listen to our members and analyse locations of high demand. (You can submit a request for a new vehicle location here.)
What makes Enterprise Car Club unique?
The key benefits of a Car Club are that the vehicles can be accessed 24/7/365 with an App or smartcard. The vehicles are collected and returned to bays quickly and easily, and we are always on hand to help you out with 24/7 support from the Clubhouse. We have the widest national network of vehicles in the sector and have over 400 Enterprise Rent-A-Car rental branches on hand to support our members and businesses make the most of our service.
How often are the vehicles cleaned and checked?
Vehicles are cleaned and safety-checked in their bays or taken to local branches for a full valet every 14 days. All valets and safety checks are digitally recorded by our specialist fleet team, who adhere to the highest possible standards.
What can we look forward to in the next 12 months?
We are looking forward to more vehicles and even more choice of vehicles. This month we have introduced our first Hyundai Ioniq, which was recently voted What Car’s hybrid of the year, the new Ford Fiesta which is the backbone of the fleet, and hopefully a greater expansion of both the retail and business vehicle range. We have many projects looking at how Car Club technology can facilitate improved breakdown and accessibility services across the UK. We will start to enter the market in Ireland and are always looking for new opportunities.
You can try out any of our wide range of vehicles by using the filter option on your vehicle search to look for specific vehicle makes and models using the app or website booking tool.
